About York University and Scholarship
York University, also known as YorkU or YU, stands as a prominent public research institution in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1959 as a non-denominational university by the York University Act, the institution has grown to become Canada’s third-largest university, boasting approximately 55,700 students, 7,000 faculty and staff, and an extensive alumni network of over 370,000 worldwide. With 11 faculties, including notable schools such as the Lassonde School of Engineering, Schulich School of Business, Osgoode Hall Law School, and Glendon College, as well as 28 research centers, York University is recognized for its diverse academic offerings and research contributions.
The university’s inception in 1960 saw its first class held in Falconer Hall on the University of Toronto campus, with 76 students in attendance. Subsequently, in 1961, York University relocated to its first campus, Glendon College, leased from the University of Toronto, emphasizing liberal arts and part-time adult education. A significant milestone occurred in 1965 with the opening of the Keele Campus in North York, now known as York University Heights.
Despite its academic achievements, York University has faced challenges, including labor strikes over the past two decades, with the longest university strike in Canadian history occurring in 2018. The university has also grappled with addressing issues of antisemitism on campus.
In global university rankings, York has made notable appearances. The 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities positioned the institution between 401-500 globally and 18-19 in Canada. The 2024 QS World University Rankings placed York University 353rd in the world and sixteenth in Canada, while the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked it 351–400 globally and 18th in Canada.
