About the University of Surrey and Scholarship
The roots of the University of Surrey trace back to the establishment of Battersea Polytechnic Institute in 1891, which welcomed its inaugural cohort of students in 1894. This institute had a noble mission—to broaden access to further and higher education for Londoners, including those from less privileged backgrounds. Its curriculum included a diverse range of subjects, encompassing Mechanical Engineering, Building, Electrical Engineering, Chemical trades, Physics, Natural Science, Mathematics, Languages, Commercial subjects, Music, and special classes tailored for women, addressing topics like Domestic Economy.
The focus on science and technology subjects became more pronounced, and around 1920, the institute began instructing the University of London students, eventually conferring the University of London external degrees. Over time, it evolved and adapted to the changing educational landscape, celebrating its 35th anniversary in May 2002 with a significant event at Guildford Cathedral. This celebration coincided with the unveiling of The Surrey Scholar sculpture, created by Allan Sly FBS, marking the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen and serving as a gift to the Guildford community. Understanding the Real World, a visual history of the university by Christopher Pick, was published to commemorate this milestone.
In 2007, the University of Surrey experienced a notable surge in overall applications, witnessing a 39% increase compared to the previous year. This trend continued with a further 12% rise in applications in 2008. However, in October 2008, the university faced disappointment in a bid to merge with London medical institute St George’s, University of London, losing out to Royal Holloway.
Consistently recognized among the top 60 universities in the United Kingdom, the University of Surrey has secured positions such as 39th in The Times and Sunday Times, 34th in The Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide, and 54th in The Guardian University Guide for 2021.
