About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The First World War slowed down the institution of Queensland’s growth, but when demand for higher education in Australia grew following the war, enrollments for instruction and research at the institution soared. As a result, the expanding institution had to search for a larger campus in the early 1920s because of the space constraints at its initial location in Brisbane’s George Street. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Mary gave the Brisbane City Council a donation of around £50,000 in 1927 to help them buy 274 acres (111 ha) of property in St. Lucia and give it to the University of Queensland as a permanent home. The pitch drop experiment was started by Thomas Parnell in the same year.
The experiment, which is still ongoing, has been dubbed the oldest in history. The St. Lucia campus’ construction was delayed by a lack of funding. As a result, the first building for the university at St. Lucia didn’t get started until 1938. After the day’s debut, it was later given the name Forgan Smith Building and was finished in 1939. The Forgan Smith Building was a military outpost that initially functioned as the forward headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during World War II.
Some of UQ’s rankings include 36th by U.S. News in the world in 2022, 47th by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2022, 43rd by the QS World University Rankings in 2024, 53rd by the Times Higher Education in the world in 2023, 37th by the CWTS Leiden Ranking in the world in 2022, and 33rd by the NTU in the world in 2022.
According to the UNSW-published Aggregate Rankings of Top Universities, which take into account performance across QS, THE, and ARWU, UQ was the 42nd-best institution in the world in 2022. More UQ researchers are working in research fields that ERA has evaluated as above world standard than at any other Australian university, according to the Commonwealth Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia 2012 National Report, which lists 22 broad fields in which UQ’s research is rated above world standard. UQ research in the fields of biomedical and clinical health sciences, technology, engineering, biological, chemical, environmental, and physical sciences was rated as superior to that of the rest of the world (rating 5).
The Queensland University Squadron Branch of the RAAF Association created this scholarship in 2011, and it is now funded through a variety of contributions from the branch’s former members and supporters.
