About the University of Hull and Scholarship

The University of Hull stands as a beacon of academic excellence and research innovation. Established in 1927 as University College Hull, it has since evolved into a distinguished public research university with a rich history and a commitment to providing a transformative educational experience.

The main university campus, situated in the heart of Hull, is a testament to the institution’s dedication to fostering learning and research. Notably, it houses the Hull York Medical School, a collaborative venture with the University of York, underscoring the university’s commitment to advancing medical education and research. Students at the University of Hull are well-served by the dynamic Hull University Union, the main provider of student catering, services, and entertainment on campus.

The university’s legacy is punctuated by a line of distinguished chancellors who have played pivotal roles in shaping its character. From Lord Middleton’s tenure in the 1950s to the recent leadership of Baroness Bottomley, the role of the chancellor has been central to the university’s journey. In July 2023, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson assumed the mantle of chancellor, marking a new chapter in the university’s history.

Hull University Union adds vibrancy to campus life, overseeing over 100 student societies and approximately 50 sports clubs affiliated with the Students Union’s Athletic Union. These clubs often compete in BUCS national university leagues, providing students with opportunities for both personal and athletic development. The union also operates a volunteering and charity hub, fostering a spirit of social responsibility among students.

The university’s main campus, strategically located in a residential district of North Hull on Cottingham Road, epitomizes the concept of a campus university. While situated in a city, the campus provides a self-contained and suburban environment, ensuring that students and staff have access to comprehensive facilities for both study and leisure. The campus boasts a large and iconic Students’ Union building, recognized as one of the finest in the country, complemented by extensive playing fields and sports facilities.

As the flagship initiative, the Chancellor’s Scholarship stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing academic talent. This merit-based program, launched for the 2024/25 academic year, seeks to reward 10 students annually with exceptional academic achievements and potential. The scholarship covers the full cost of undergraduate tuition and is open to UK students across all subject areas, fostering inclusivity and recognizing diverse talents.

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is made possible through the generous support of the Chancellor’s Circle, a community comprising dedicated alumni and friends of the University. Their commitment to advancing education ensures that deserving students can pursue their academic aspirations and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the University of Hull.

In essence, the Chancellor’s Scholarship embodies the university’s ethos of academic excellence, holistic development, and inclusivity, providing a platform for aspiring individuals to thrive under the mentorship of the new Chancellor, the Right Honourable Alan Johnson.
