About the University of Edinburgh and Scholarship
The University of Edinburgh stands as a venerable institution, steeped in centuries of academic excellence and intellectual contributions. Established in 1582 under the royal charter of King James VI, the university holds the distinction of being one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and is the sixth-oldest continuously operating university in the English-speaking world.
The University of Edinburgh played a pivotal role in the Scottish Enlightenment, contributing significantly to the city’s emergence as a chief intellectual center and earning it the moniker “Athens of the North.” With a rich history and a commitment to academic prowess, the university has become a prominent global player in higher education.
Edinburgh’s global standing is underscored by its impressive rankings across major university assessments, with QS, THE, and ARWU consistently placing it within the top 40 worldwide. The university is a proud member of prestigious research-intensive university associations, including the Coimbra Group, League of European Research Universities, Russell Group, Una Europa, and Universitas 21.
In the fiscal year ending 31 July 2022, the University of Edinburgh demonstrated financial robustness, boasting a total income of £1.262 billion. A significant portion, £331.6 million, was derived from research grants and contracts. Notably, the university possesses the third-largest endowment in the UK, trailing only Cambridge and Oxford.
With five main campuses spread across the city, the University of Edinburgh’s footprint includes buildings of historical and architectural significance, especially in the Old Town. The institution’s commitment to fostering a global academic community is evident in its position as the seventh-largest university in the UK by enrollment. Remarkably, it receives over 75,000 undergraduate applications annually, securing its position as the second-most popular university in the UK based on application volume.
As part of its ongoing commitment to academic excellence, the School of History, Classics, and Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is extending a warm welcome to overseas students. To facilitate their educational journey, the school is offering up to five undergraduate scholarships, each valued at £1,000. These scholarships, tenable for the 2024/25 academic year, will be automatically deducted from tuition fees, with any remaining funds directed toward supporting living costs.
