About the University of Aberdeen and Scholarship
The University of Aberdeen, a venerable institution rooted in the rich history of Scotland, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of academic excellence. Established in 1495 by Bishop William Elphinstone, who, on behalf of King James IV, petitioned Pope Alexander VI to establish King’s College, the university holds the distinction of being one of Scotland’s four ancient universities and the fifth-oldest English-speaking university globally.
Consistently positioned among the top 200 universities worldwide and within the top 20 in the United Kingdom, according to The Guardian, the University of Aberdeen has earned its place as a leading institution. In the 2019 Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, it was ranked 31st globally for its impact on society, showcasing its commitment to making a meaningful contribution beyond academia. Recognizing its achievements, the university was named the 2019 Scottish University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. Moreover, in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, over 75% of the university’s research was classified as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent.’
Despite its academic prowess, the university is actively engaged in promoting diversity and widening access to higher education. Despite having one of the lowest percentages of students from lower-class backgrounds—ranking sixth from the bottom for class equality—the University of Aberdeen is dedicated to correcting this imbalance.
