About UN Geneva and the Study Program
The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), situated in Geneva, Switzerland, stands as a pivotal hub among the four major offices of the United Nations, where numerous UN agencies converge to address global challenges collaboratively. Nestled within the historic Palais des Nations complex, originally constructed for the League of Nations between 1929 and 1938, UNOG serves as a focal point for international diplomacy and cooperation.
The Palais des Nations houses the primary administrative offices of UNOG, fostering a dynamic environment where various UN entities converge to work towards common goals. Among these entities are the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE).
Beyond the administrative functions, the Palais des Nations serves as a platform for bi-weekly briefings conducted by UN specialized agencies and other UN entities with offices in Geneva. These briefings, organized by the United Nations Information Service in Geneva, facilitate communication and collaboration among the diverse entities working towards shared objectives.
While the Palais des Nations remains a central locus of UN activities, additional offices or functions hosted by the Swiss Government accommodate certain UN specialized agencies and other entities. This decentralized approach underscores the widespread impact and reach of the United Nations in addressing global issues.
One unique educational initiative hosted by UNOG is the Graduate Study Program (GSP), a venerable program now in its 62nd year. This transformative two-week summer seminar has played a pivotal role in training over 3,000 young individuals from more than 110 countries across all continents. The GSP offers a comprehensive experience, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of the United Nations and “International Geneva” through a multifaceted curriculum encompassing first-hand observations, lectures, research, and networking opportunities.
The annual report produced by UNOG encapsulates a wealth of information, cataloging major events and activities transpiring throughout the year. This commitment to transparency and documentation reflects UNOG’s dedication to fostering international collaboration, understanding, and knowledge dissemination in pursuit of a more peaceful and equitable world.
