About Victoria University of Wellington and Scholarship

Wellington, New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington (Mori: Te Herenga Waka) is a public university. It was a founding college of the University of New Zealand and was created in 1897 under an act of parliament.

The institution provides a wide range of additional courses in addition to its well-regarded programs in law, the humanities, and several scientific fields. All first-year courses are accessible to enrollment, however, some programs (such as those in law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, and engineering) have restrictions on second-year enrollment.

Victoria, which was placed fourth in 2006 and third in 2003, received the highest average research grade in the New Zealand Government’s Performance Based Research Fund exercise in both 2012 and 2018. The QS World University Rankings (2020) have Victoria placed 215th out of the top 500 universities worldwide.

Transparency International NZ Dame Suzanne Snively Scholarship was established by Transparency New Zealand in honor of their previous board chair, Dame Suzanne Snively, to assist a student in conducting a study on issues of governance-related integrity, transparency, and accountability. A female student pursuing an Honours or Master by Thesis degree is the target audience for the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria for Transparency International NZ Dame Suzanne Snively Scholarship

  • The applicants must be female students at the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington pursuing an Honours or Master by Thesis degree.

Selection Criteria

  • The applicant must be enrolled at the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington in an Honours or Masters by Thesis program.
  • Thesis submissions from applicants must have a strong emphasis on transparency or anti-corruption about legal or regulatory requirements, ethical leadership, or ethical culture.
  • Candidates must be female.

Selection Procedure

The quality of each applicant’s proposed thesis and their academic record will be evaluated. As part of the selection process, candidates could also receive an invitation to an interview. The Brian Picot Chair in Ethical Leadership, in collaboration with the donor and appropriate academic staff from the Wellington School of Business and Government, Faculty of Law, or Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, will choose the successful recipient.

More Information

Within one month of receiving the award, recipients must write a letter of gratitude to the giver. The recipient may be requested, for instance, to discuss their thesis results at a TINZ Webinar and/or board meeting at Transparency NZ, as well as to write an article for the TINZ newsletter. It is understood that the results could be included in publications by Transparency NZ.

Application Procedure for Transparency International NZ Dame Suzanne Snively Scholarship

On or before the deadline, a completed online application must be submitted. Applications that are submitted late or incomplete won’t be approved. To be considered, the application must be submitted along with all necessary supporting materials (including references) by 4.30 p.m. on the deadline day.

Terms and Conditions

  • All Scholarship offers are subject to the Recipient’s full-time enrollment in a full-year program (defined as the number of points deemed full-time by Studylink) throughout the Scholarship’s allotted period. This condition must be met before the Scholarship may be awarded.
  • The Scholarship cannot be chosen for a later year.
  • The Scholarship could be awarded in addition to several awards.
  • If the student quits Victoria University of Wellington while the scholarship is still in place or doesn’t make enough progress, it’s common to expect them to partially return the award. If a scholarship winner intends to withdraw, they must inform the scholarship office in advance.
  • Recipients are expected to function as ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and, if requested, participate in marketing campaigns or events.
  • The applicability of the terms and conditions of the Transparency International NZ Dame Suzanne Snively Scholarship may be altered at the Deciding Authority’s discretion in exceptional cases or to prevent hardship for any Scholarship applicant.
