About the University of Bradford and Scholarship

The rich history of the University of Bradford can be traced back to the establishment of the Mechanics Institute in 1832, which was founded to address the growing need for skilled workers in the city. Evolving with the times, the institute transformed, eventually becoming the Bradford Technical College in 1882. In 1957, a pivotal moment occurred when the institution transitioned into the Bradford Institute of Technology, assuming responsibility for higher education courses. This period also witnessed significant physical expansion with the initiation of construction on the iconic Richmond Building in 1963, alongside the subsequent additions of the Horton Building and Chesham Building on the opposite side of Richmond Road.

The pivotal moment in the university’s history arrived in 1966 when it was granted a charter of incorporation, formally establishing the University of Bradford. The inaugural chancellor was none other than Prime Minister Harold Wilson. The 1970s marked a transformative era as the university emerged as a significant international center for Yugoslav studies. The establishment of the University of Bradford Postgraduate School of Yugoslav Studies and the Research Unit in Yugoslav Studies in 1965, featuring the notable involvement of geographer Frederick Bernard Singleton, underscored the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

In the ensuing decades, campus expansion continued with the construction of essential facilities like the Library and Computer Centre, Communal Building, Pemberton Building, and Ashfield Building. A notable milestone in 1996 was the merger with the former Bradford and Airedale College of Health, resulting in the formation of the School of Health Studies within the university.

While adapting to changing educational landscapes, certain departments experienced transitions, including the closure of the Department of Physics in the 1980s and the temporary closure of the Department of Mathematics to new undergraduates in 1997. This reshaping of academic structures saw the integration of remaining postgraduate activities and lecture support into the Department of Computing as the Mathematics Unit. A subsequent noteworthy development was the reopening of the Department of Mathematics within the School of Computing, Informatics, and Media.

The University of Bradford earned acclaim for its dedication to providing a holistic educational experience, as reflected in its high rankings for graduate employment in The Times Good University Guide, securing the 7th position in 2005 and an impressive 2nd position in 2006. Additionally, the university has consistently ranked among the top 50 English universities based on research funding, according to HEFCE 2009–10.

Embracing a commitment to global diversity and inclusivity, the University of Bradford takes pride in extending a scholarship opportunity to all international students, irrespective of nationality, who meet the specified eligibility criteria. This scholarship exemplifies the university’s dedication to fostering a dynamic and globally engaged student community.
