About the University of Gloucestershire and Scholarship
The University of Gloucestershire, a distinguished public institution situated in Gloucestershire, England, boasts a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence. Spanning three campuses, with two in Cheltenham and one in Gloucester, the university is set to expand further with the acquisition of the former Debenhams store in Gloucester City Centre, scheduled to open as a new campus in 2023.
The university’s roots can be traced back to the Cheltenham Training College, established in 1847 by Reverend Francis Close. Over time, the institution evolved, with the Cheltenham Training College separating into St Paul’s College of Education and St Mary’s College of Education in 1921. The eventual merger of these schools in 1979 led to the formation of the College of St Paul & St Mary. In 1990, this institution joined forces with the Gloucestershire College of Arts & Technology, culminating in the creation of the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education. Recognizing its academic prowess, the college achieved university status in October 2001.
A trailblazer in environmental sustainability, the University of Gloucestershire implemented its strategy in 1993 and became the first British university to meet the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. The institution consistently earns acclaim for its green initiatives, ranking as the second-greenest university in the UK in the People & Planet Green League 2016. Notably, it is the only British institution consistently ranked in the top six of the league since its inception in 2007. Recognizing its dedication to sustainability, the university has been a frequent winner at the EUAC Green Gown Awards.
The university hosts RCE Severn, a Regional Centre of Expertise in Sustainability Education endorsed by the United Nations University. As one of 85 similar centers worldwide, RCE Severn plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability education.
Offering a diverse array of academic programs, the university provides nearly 100 undergraduate courses across ten academic schools. Subjects range from Accounting and Law to Business Management, Computing, Journalism, Fine Art, Humanities, Biology, Geography, Social Science, Education, and Sports.
The university’s commitment to delivering flexible education is evident in its provision of part-time and full-time undergraduate study options. Additionally, it offers Fast Track two-year full-time programs, allowing students to expedite their academic journey.
In terms of academic rankings, the University of Gloucestershire stands out. It is positioned 38th out of 132 for teaching quality and 44th out of 132 for overall student experience, according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. The institution prides itself on an impressive overall satisfaction score of 86%, surpassing the national average by 3%, as per the National Student Survey 2018.
Moreover, the university actively supports high-performing student-athletes through the Sports Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship, designed to reward sporting prowess, provides a tuition fee waiver of £5,000. Open exclusively to international fee-paying students engaged in high-performance sports, the scholarship reflects the university’s commitment to fostering excellence across diverse fields.
