About the University of Twente and Scholarship
The University of Twente, formerly known as Technische Hogeschool Twente (THT), is a distinguished institution in the Netherlands with a rich history of technological education. It was founded in 1961 as THT and later transformed into the University of Twente in 1986 following changes in Dutch education legislation. This transition marked its ascent to the status of a full-fledged university, making it the third polytechnic institute in the Netherlands to achieve this distinction, following in the footsteps of the Delft University of Technology and the Eindhoven University of Technology.
The Dutch government’s decision to establish the country’s third technical university in Enschede, the primary city in the Twente region, was influenced by several key factors. Twente boasted a thriving manufacturing industry encompassing textiles, metalwork, electrical engineering, and chemicals, making it an ideal location for a technical university. This decision was further motivated by the need to stimulate the local economy, given the decline in the textile sector. The municipality of Enschede played a pivotal role in this endeavor by providing the Drienerlo estate as the site for the university’s first campus, thus becoming the home of the University of Twente.
The University of Twente has consistently garnered international recognition and prestige, earning a spot among the top 200 most prestigious universities globally, according to the Times Higher Education Ranking. In the Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure 2021 ranking, the university demonstrated exceptional performance, securing an impressive eleventh place in the world. Additionally, the fields of psychology and social sciences at the university achieved notable rankings, ranging from 101st to 125th worldwide.
The university’s commitment to Geoinformation and Earth Observation Sciences was highlighted in the Shanghai Ranking 2021, positioning the institution among the top ten universities worldwide in the realm of remote sensing. This commitment will continue to expand in the coming years. As affirmed by the Keuzegids Universiteiten, a prominent national university ranking, the University of Twente stands out as the best technical university in the Netherlands, emphasizing its dedication to academic excellence in the field of technology.
For students passionate about technology-enhanced learning and eager to explore how platform technologies can drive IT innovations and collaboration within regional logistics ecosystems, the University of Twente offers an exciting opportunity through the International Ph.D. Positions in SMART4L Project. This scholarship program is open to international students who aspire to pursue a doctoral degree at the university, providing them with a platform to engage in cutting-edge research and innovation in the field of technology.
