About Newcastle University and Scholarship
Newcastle University, officially known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, stands as a prominent public research institution nestled in the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne in North East England. Beyond its geographical borders, the university has expanded its influence with overseas campuses in Singapore and Malaysia. Renowned as a red-brick university, it proudly holds membership in the prestigious Russell Group, an association uniting research-intensive universities across the United Kingdom.
The university’s rich history traces its origins back to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834, later evolving into the College of Medicine. Simultaneously, the College of Physical Science, later renamed Armstrong College, was founded in 1871. These institutions eventually merged to form the larger division of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges constituting the complementary counterpart. The amalgamation of the Newcastle colleges culminated in the creation of King’s College in 1937. Subsequently, through an Act of Parliament in 1963, King’s College assumed the title of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newcastle University embraces a commitment to equitable access to higher education, proudly offering sanctuary scholarships to support individuals with aspirations to study at the university. These scholarships encompass comprehensive tuition fee support and a bursary designed to assist with living expenses. This initiative is particularly targeted towards applicants with asylum-seeker backgrounds, fostering their ability to pursue higher-level studies.
In a demonstration of its dedication to inclusive education, the sanctuary scholarships provided by Newcastle University cover the entire tuition fee, removing a significant financial barrier for deserving students. Additionally, recipients of these scholarships are entitled to a living cost grant, with a maximum value of £16,970. It is essential to note that while the bursary addresses living expenses, certain costs such as legal fees, moving expenses, support for family and dependents, and miscellaneous expenses are not covered by the bursary.
