About Newcastle University and Scholarship
Newcastle University, officially known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, stands as a distinguished public research institution situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. As a member of the esteemed Russell Group, an association of research-intensive UK universities, Newcastle University has earned its place among the leading educational institutions globally.
The university traces its origins to the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834, and the College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College), founded in 1871. These foundational entities later coalesced to form the larger division of the federal University of Durham, with the complementary Durham Colleges forming the other part. The culmination of this merger resulted in the establishment of King’s College in 1937. In 1963, a transformative Act of Parliament officially designated King’s College as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newcastle University is structured into three faculties, namely the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering. Offering a diverse array of academic programs, the university provides around 175 full-time undergraduate degree programs across arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine. Additionally, students can choose from approximately 340 postgraduate taught and research programs spanning various disciplines.
Financially robust, the institution reported an annual income of £543.2 million for the 2021–22 fiscal year, with £109.6 million sourced from research grants and contracts. Notably, Newcastle University is a consistent performer in global and national rankings. In 2023, it secured the 110th position globally by QS, 292nd by Leiden, 139th by Times Higher Education, and 201st–300th by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Nationally, it attained the joint 33rd spot in the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, the 30th position in the Complete University Guide, and the joint 63rd rank by the Guardian.
Newcastle University is an active participant in the Russell Group of 24 research-intensive universities. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), a key evaluation of research quality in UK higher education institutions, positioned Newcastle at joint 33rd by GPA and an impressive 15th for research power.
To foster a tradition of academic excellence and promote continued education among the family members of both current and former international graduates, Newcastle University has instituted an incentive program. This initiative seeks to encourage and support the educational aspirations of individuals connected to the university’s global community.
