About McMaster University and Scholarship
McMaster University, situated in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, stands as a distinguished public research institution with its main campus encompassing 121 hectares of land near the residential areas of Ainslie Wood and Westdale, adjacent to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The university operates six academic faculties, namely the DeGroote School of Business, Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Social Science, and Science. As a prominent member of the U15, a consortium of research-intensive universities in Canada, McMaster University is committed to fostering academic excellence and research innovation.
The university derives its name from William McMaster, a notable Canadian senator and banker, who generously bequeathed C$900,000 to support its establishment. Originally incorporated in 1887 under the legislation of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, it resulted from the merger of the Toronto Baptist College and Woodstock College. Initially opening its doors in Toronto in 1890, the university later relocated to Hamilton in 1930, prompted by inadequate facilities and the gift of land in the new location.
In 1957, McMaster University moved from sectarian governance to become a publicly supported, privately chartered non-denominational university. With approximately 32,000 undergraduate and over 5,000 graduate students as of 2022, the institution has a varied student body. Government officials, scholars, corporate executives, Gates Cambridge Scholars, Rhodes Scholars, Nobel laureates, and other notable graduates attest to the institution’s dedication to turning forth successful and influential people.
McMaster University is a globally and nationally recognized institution that has achieved a spot in several rankings. According to the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities, it came in at number four in Canada and 90th overall. McMaster was placed 189th in the world and sixth in Canada in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, and 103rd in the world and fourth in Canada in the 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
