About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The first institution in the state, the University of Queensland, was formally established on April 16, 1910, with the gazetting of nominees to the first UQ Senate. It was founded in 1909 as a result of a State Parliament Act. Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street served as the first place where education was offered in 1911. 83 students (60 males and 23 women) were enrolled in the first year among three faculties (Arts, Science, and Engineering).
The University outgrew its position in the center of the city following World War One. The Medical School is presently based in a second location in Victoria Park that was purchased in 1922. Four years later, the land in St. Lucia where the university’s current main campus is situated was purchased with financial assistance from Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne. The first edifice, afterward known as the Forgan Smith structure in honor of the then-Premier, was finished in 1939 after construction on the St. Lucia site began. It served as the state-of-the-art command center for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during World War II.
The University and the Queensland Agricultural College merged in 1990 at (now Gatton), 80 kilometers west of Brisbane, merging the two oldest institutions of higher learning in the State and greatly expanding enrollments. The two schools have long worked together on teaching and research initiatives. The first students were accepted to the old Queensland Agricultural College in 1897.
The Queensland Branch of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) established the IChemE Ming Leung Scholarship in 1993 to support a deserving student enrolled in the third year of a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) program in chemical engineering, chemical and biological engineering, chemical and materials engineering, or chemical and metallurgical engineering. From 1980 to 1985, Professor Ming Leung headed the Department of chemical engineering and was a highly esteemed and gifted chemical engineer. It was a big loss to the University and the profession that he passed so suddenly.

Eligibility Criteria for IChemE Ming Leung Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the IChemE Ming Leung Scholarship at the University of Queensland:
- possess 28 to 36 completed units toward an approved program (see below)
- are full-time students enrolled in one of the following approved programs:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/ Master of Engineering
- A dual engineering program
- are students who are enrolled in any engineering subject that includes chemical engineering
- previous to finishing your application, you are already an IChemE member or have sought to become one.
