About the University Of Pittsburg and Fellowship
Established in 2001, the Global Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh is a collaborative effort between the University Center for International Studies (UCIS) and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). Under the visionary leadership of then-UCIS Director William Brustein and GSPIA Dean Carolyn Ban, the program was conceived as a means of advancing Pitt’s commitment to “expand the global focus by increasing international study and research opportunities.”

Within the University of Pittsburgh, the Global Studies Center administers the H.J. Heinz Fellowships, a prestigious initiative designed to support students from developing countries pursuing a Master’s degree. These fellowships are specifically aimed at individuals demonstrating the potential to emerge as future leaders in various sectors, including public service, government, non-profit organizations, or the private industry.
The overarching objective of the Heinz Fellowships is to empower recipients early in their careers, enhancing their capacity to contribute significantly to the development of their home countries. Additionally, the program aims to deepen fellows’ understanding of the United States, fostering global perspectives and cross-cultural insights.
Starting from the 2012-13 academic year, the Heinz Fellowship underwent restructuring to align with specific Master’s programs offered by professional schools at Pitt. The Global Studies Center no longer directly accepts Heinz Fellowship applications. Prospective candidates interested in applying for the Fellowship are advised to reach out to the respective professional school they have applied to, following the receipt of their acceptance. This approach ensures a tailored and integrated experience for Heinz Fellowship recipients, allowing them to maximize the opportunities provided by the University of Pittsburgh.

Benefits:
This is a one- to two-year fellowship. Support is provided in the form of a $1,000 program and professional activities fund in addition to a $19,200 living stipend that is paid in monthly installments.
Eligibility Criteria for the University Of Pittsburg H.J. Heinz Fellowship
Applicants are advised to meet the following requirements to be qualified for the University Of Pittsburg H.J. Heinz Fellowship:
- Candidates must have been admitted to one of the following master’s programs: Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), School of Law, School of Education, or School of Nursing, starting with the academic year for which they are applying for the Heinz Fellowship.
- Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
- Candidates need to be fluent in writing, speaking, and reading English.
- Candidates who are just starting out or in the middle of their careers will be given preference.
- Those working in the practitioner and policy areas are the target audience for the fellowship. Basic academic research, academic sabbaticals, and medical research are not eligible for this award.
Selection Procedure
- The Fellow is required to address University members with at least one presentation on a topic connected to their professional background during their residency. Furthermore, the Fellow is highly encouraged to engage in community outreach initiatives in the area by giving a talk to high school students or other interested individuals about their home country.
- A contract between the grantee and the university is formed when the candidate accepts the award. Grantees are expected to stay for the duration of the award unless there are unanticipated emergencies. Without the university’s approval, a grantee who departs from the United States or ends the grant before the date stated in the grant permission would be expected to pay back all costs incurred by the university on the beneficiary’s behalf.
- Fellows must submit a final report detailing and assessing the entirety of their experiences and activities throughout the Heinz Fellowship program, along with their intentions for utilizing the Fellowship when they return to their home country. These reports are then given to representatives of the H.J. Heinz Company Foundation and program authorities at the University of Pittsburgh. New Fellowship recipients will also consult these reports for references. The UCIS will award Fellows with a Heinz Program credential upon acceptance of their final report.
