About Coe College and Scholarship
Coe College, established in 1851 by Rev. Williston Jones as the School for the Prophets, boasts a rich and storied history rooted in visionary philanthropy and a resolute commitment to providing inclusive education. The institution’s inception was catalyzed by Rev. Jones’s efforts to raise funds for students attending Eastern seminaries. In the course of this fundraising campaign, he met a kind farmer called Daniel Coe, whose $1,500 gift not only made the college possible to start but also set the groundwork for a groundbreaking coeducational school in Cedar Rapids.
As one of the first coeducational institutions in the US, the Cedar Rapids Collegiate Institute opened its doors in 1853, serving as a symbol of Daniel Coe’s ambition. There were periods of transition in the years that followed, and in 1875 the college was renamed Coe College Institute. The Sinclair Meat Packing Company founder, T. M. Sinclair, made a private donation in 1881, which ultimately led to the official founding of Coe College, a prestigious university.
The college’s commitment to academic excellence was evidenced by its accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1907. A historic event occurred in the history of Coe College in 1910 with the appointment of Presbyterian preacher John Abner Marquis as president. Reverend Marquis, a beloved Presbyterian clergyman, helped to usher in an unprecedented era of the college’s expansion and influence. The first person to hold the highest office in the Presbyterian Church, Moderator, was Marquis, who achieved a lot while in that role.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.), Bachelor of Music (B.M.), and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees are among the many academic programs that Coe College provides. At this college that supports academic diversity, students can create customized majors and explore over 60 topic areas with the help of knowledgeable staff members.
With 21 men’s and women’s sports teams, Coe College is a proud member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III. The Kohawks are a group of athletes that compete in baseball, basketball, soccer, track & field, swimming, and diving. They are symbolized by a stylized bird. The school’s commitment to offering a complete sporting experience is further evidenced by its support of five coed sports teams: Esports, Clay Target, Cheer, Dance, and Archery. The largest undergraduate student-run writing center in the nation was founded in 1986 and is located at Coe College’s Writing Center.
The center, which employs more than sixty undergraduates, organizes more than two thousand student conferences a year and actively participates in the creation of multiple small campus periodicals.
