About École Normale Supérieure and Scholarship
The École normale supérieure – PSL (ENS Paris) is a prestigious grande école located in Paris, France, and is a constituent member of Paris Sciences et Lettres University (PSL). Renowned for its special historical significance, substantial endowment, and considerable influence in French society, ENS Paris is considered one of the most esteemed institutions among the grandes écoles. Its students are commonly known as normaliens, while its graduates are referred to as archicubes.
Founded in 1794 during the French Revolution, ENS Paris initially aimed to provide standardized training for high school teachers in France but was temporarily closed. Napoleon I reinstated the institution as pensionnat normal from 1808 to 1822, and it was officially reestablished in 1826, taking on the name École normale in 1830. The term “supérieure” (meaning upper) was added in 1845 when institutes for primary teachers’ training, called écoles normales, were created, resulting in its current name. In 1936, ENS Paris expanded its scope to offer university-level education.
The ENS International Selection Scholarships are designed to support the most promising international students, whether in the fields of Science or Arts and humanities, to pursue a three-year Master’s Degree at the university. Admission through the competitive examination of the International selection provides access to excellent training, interaction with exceptional researchers, and an enriching academic environment. International students, integrated into the normaliens community, simultaneously pursue their studies at ENS and the university. They receive a 1000 euro grant for three years and accommodation on one of the ENS campuses. Upon completion of their studies, these students earn a master’s degree in their specialty and the École normale supérieure diploma.
The examination process involves two stages: an initial selection based on applications, followed by oral and written tests in Paris for shortlisted candidates. This comprehensive process ensures that the most qualified and promising students are granted the opportunity to benefit from the exceptional educational environment provided by ENS Paris.
