Guidelines for writing an outline research proposal
If you want to pursue an MPhil or PhD at Goldsmiths, a strong research proposal is necessary. It should include information on the subject matter you are interested in as well as your knowledge and background in the field. If you are interviewed, the plan will serve as the starting point of the conversation and will be crucial in determining the level of supervisory support required.
Any topic you decide to explore will need a significant time and energy commitment on your part. In light of this, you should carefully assess what you want to learn, if the job is meaningful to you, and whether your interest and dedication will be sustained over the years.
The length of the proposal should range from 1,500 to 2,000 words. Even though the precise form may change depending on what you want to perform, you should try to include the following:
Title
Even if this title is merely provisional, it should make it obvious which academic area you are studying and where your research will be concentrated.
Introduction
This should describe the overall area of study and why you think it’s vital to research a particular facet of it. It is useful to explain how your personal experience led you to the specific research questions you are posing and why you believe you are qualified to conduct the study.
Main research questions
Clearly state what it is that you hope to learn. To the extent possible given the time and resources at hand, try to make your research questions as narrowly focused as possible.
Reviewing the literature
You must demonstrate that you are familiar with the key arguments and problems surrounding your field of study. Important contributions from the literature ought to be cited and discussed. These might be based on theory or practice-related research (see the section below). The connections to the task you want to undertake must be made clear in either scenario. Make sure to explain what is currently known in the region and explain how your work will contribute something fresh and unique to what is already known.
Methodology
Please give a summary of your desired research strategy. For instance, empirical research may make use of qualitatively or quantitatively characterized observation, interviews, or document analysis. The construction of an act or artifact that contributes to knowledge on its own might be the basis of a further variation known as “practice research.”
Whatever method you use, it must be obvious how any information or technique can assist you in responding to your core research question. You must demonstrate that you are aware of the many methods and analyses you may employ and give a succinct justification for the ones that are most suited to your study. Include information on the location, potential collaborators, time frame, and if you will be able to secure the necessary access or permissions.
Ethical issues
Give a brief description of any special concerns that would need to be taken into account, such as safeguarding your participants’ safety and upholding their privacy and autonomy.
