About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
A State Parliament Act created the University of Queensland in 1909, and it was formally constituted on April 16, 1910, with the gazette of appointments to the first UQ Senate. In 1911, the first lessons were held in Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street. There were three faculties and 83 students (60 males and 23 females) in the first year.
In 1999, UQ established a significant campus in Ipswich’s provincial center, replacing the Challinor Centre mental health hospital. This campus was transferred to the University of Southern Queensland in January 2015, however, UQ continued to teach at the USQ Ipswich campus until 2016 to assist certain students with their studies.
Queensland has a high emphasis on science, medical, and technology research. UQ Professor Ian Frazer pioneered the creation of cervical cancer vaccinations, Gardasil and Cervarix, as part of the university’s scientific advancement. According to the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, UQ has assumed the lead in various areas of cancer research.
Dr Jian Zhou Memorial Scholarship was established in Dr Jian Zhou’s memory to help higher degree by research (HDR) students in health and medicine.
