About the University of Sydney and Scholarship

The University of Sydney Act 1850 (NSW), which was passed on September 24, 1850, and was signed on October 1 by Governor Sir Charles Fitzroy, created the institution. In the governor’s proclamation, Wentworth was listed among three ministers of religion as one of the founding members of the university’s senate.

On October 11, 1852, the university was established two years later in the Big Schoolroom of what is now Sydney Grammar School. John Woolley served as the school’s first principal, while John Smith was its first chemistry and experimental physics professor. The first to graduate was Sir William Charles Windeyer. It was one of the earliest public, non-denominational, and secular institutions in the British Empire and the first university in Australia.
