About the University of Ottawa and Scholarship
The University of Ottawa, sometimes known as uOttawa or U of O, is a multilingual public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Its French name is Université d’Ottawa. The university became a pontifical university when Pope Leo XIII handed it a pontifical charter on February 5, 1889. On July 1, 1965, the university underwent a reorganization and became a company separate from any outside entity or religious group. As a result, the newly established Saint Paul institution, federated with the institution, preserved the civil and pontifical charters. The reconstituted university kept the surviving civil faculties.
The largest bilingual university in the world that speaks both English and French is the University of Ottawa. Ten schools, including the Telfer School of Management, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Social Sciences, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, oversee the university’s extensive array of academic programs.
There are 12 locations of the University of Ottawa Library, which has a collection of more than 4.5 million books. With a projected research income of 420 million Canadian dollars in 2022, the institution belongs to the Canadian U15 group of research-intensive universities. The primary campus is located in the Sandy Hill community, 42.5 hectares (105 acres) northeast of Downtown Ottawa and just across the Rideau Canal.
Originally known as the College of Bytown, the institution was established in 1848 by Joseph-Bruno Guigues, the first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa. After being entrusted to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1861, it was given the name College of Ottawa.
