Established in 1966, the university carries the name of the renowned British navigator Matthew Flinders, whose exploration and surveying of the Australian and South Australian coastline in the early 19th century left an indelible mark on the region’s history.

The Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to honoring legacies and fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The scholarship finds its roots in a generous bequest from the estate of Bert and Carmel Baulderstone, further enriched by contributions from their family, friends, and colleagues. Carmel Baulderstone, formerly Carmel Summerfield, embarked on her nursing journey in 1944, registering as a nurse in South Australia after undergoing four years of training at Calvary Hospital. Her dedication extended to an additional nine months of training in Obstetrical Nursing in Launceston. While many of her generation saw their nursing careers conclude with marriage, Carmel maintained a lifelong connection with the nursing profession. Actively involved in the Calvary Past Nurses’ Association, she displayed a keen interest in medical research and the evolving landscape of nursing practices.

The Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship stands as a fitting tribute to Carmel’s commitment to education and her enduring love for the nursing profession. Specifically tailored to provide support for undergraduate nursing students admitted to the Bachelor of Nursing program at Flinders University, the scholarship targets those in the second or third year of their course. The primary aim is to facilitate their engagement in a Professional Experience Placement at a College of Nursing and Health Sciences-approved clinical education facility situated in a rural or remote setting.

This scholarship, beyond its financial support, embodies Carmel Baulderstone’s passion for nursing and her recognition of the pivotal role healthcare professionals play in addressing the unique health needs of Australians residing in rural and remote areas.

Candidates for the Carmel Baulderstone Memorial Scholarship are expected to demonstrate a profound knowledge and understanding of these health needs, reflecting the scholarship’s commitment to nurturing professionals attuned to the challenges and nuances of healthcare delivery in diverse settings.
