About London Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program (LIDo) and Scholarship
The largest Doctoral Training Partnership in the UK sponsored by BBSRC is the London Interdisciplinary Biosciences Consortium.
Within a broad range of scientific topics, including biological, biomedical, veterinary, physical, computational, engineering, and mathematical sciences, LIDo offers financed PhD studentships (tuition fees + stipend for living costs). The BBSRC and the LIDo partner institutions offer funding for the PhD program. Approximately thirty of the fifty studentships that LIDo offers each year are available to international students at full overseas tuition price rates*. During the four years of the curriculum, students can choose between two paths:
1) Doctoral training program (DTP), wherein you select your final PhD project after completing two 4-month project rotations in the first year. At the beginning of the program, rotations can be chosen from a portfolio of no less than 200 projects. While most students select from pre-approved projects, there is an option to collaborate with a possible supervisor and submit a project proposal for the LIDo portfolio ahead of the course start in the spring. A three-month professional internship (PIPS) unrelated to your project is part of the DTP course.
2) iCASE, where you apply for a project and start working on it right away. During your PhD, you will work on this topic in conjunction with an industrial partner, working on the project for three to eighteen months. Eight prestigious universities and research centers in London—Birkbeck, King’s College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of Greenwich, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, Royal Veterinary College, and University College London—offer DTP and iCASE projects.
The SysMIC course, which provides instruction in fundamental and advanced mathematical, computational, and statistical approaches for multidisciplinary life-science research, is a prerequisite for both the DTP and iCASE programs. At this time, LIDo is unable to pay extra expenses incurred by overseas students, such as those related to relocating or applying for visas.
Graduates with a strong interest in multidisciplinary research are targeted for this 4-year program. Highly motivated students from a variety of academic backgrounds, such as biological, biomedical, veterinary, physical, computational, engineering, or mathematics sciences, are encouraged to apply to LIDo.

Scholarship Value: Check Below
Number of awards: Several
Study level: PhD

Benefits:
Every year, LIDo provides 41 BBSRC studentships through their iCASE and DTP entrance channels. Each studentship pays a stipend at the UKRI London rate in addition to covering home expenses.
The annual stipend rate for London UKRI is currently £19,668. Up to 11 international students may be funded by LIDo at full overseas tuition fee rates; these spots may be awarded to students pursuing the DTP or iCASE routes of entrance, and they will be reserved for a designated LIDo consortium partner.
The LIDo consortium partners provide several institutionally sponsored DTP spaces on the program annually in addition to their BBSRC studentships. These grants cover home tuition costs and a tax-free stipend at the same rate as the UKRI; however, they limit students to rotations and PhD research conducted at the funding institution.
Applications from students who are self-funding and those who have received other scholarships are also accepted.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Up to eleven studentships paying all abroad tuition are available from LIDo. Expenses for student visas and relocation are currently above their means, therefore overseas applicants should keep these things in mind.
Accepting applications from kids receiving alternative scholarships is another great pleasure of theirs. If you would like to discuss these alternatives, please get in touch with the program.
