About the University of Sydney and Scholarship
The University of Sydney (USYD), standing as the vanguard of academia in Australia, boasts a rich legacy as the country’s oldest university, founded in 1850. Affectionately known as Sydney Uni, it holds a distinguished position among the nation’s six sandstone universities. Pioneering the principles of meritocracy, it was one of the world’s first universities to admit students solely based on academic merit and its commitment to equality extended to welcoming women on the same basis as men.
Comprising eight academic faculties and university schools, the institution provides a diverse array of educational opportunities, ranging from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees. The impact of the University of Sydney transcends its national borders, with notable alumni and faculty, including five Nobel laureates and two Crafoord laureates, making significant contributions to various fields.
In its continuous pursuit of academic excellence and societal contributions, the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney introduces the Faculty of Science Australian Research Council (ARC) Scholarship. This scholarship represents a commitment to supporting research candidates engaged in projects that directly benefit the Australian community. Aligned with ARC-funded research initiatives within the Faculty of Science, this scholarship seeks to empower high-caliber students to contribute to diverse fields of ARC-funded research.
The scholarship, structured to be co-funded by the Faculty of Science and external ARC research grants or industry-funded projects, exemplifies a collaborative approach to advancing knowledge. It may cover various projects, including but not limited to ARC Discovery Project (DP), ARC Fellowships (traditional and industry), ARC Linkage Project (LP), ARC Special Research Initiative (SRI), or others, subject to approval from the Associate Dean (Research Education).
Recipients of this scholarship are set to benefit from a stipend allowance equivalent to the University of Sydney’s Research Training Program (RTP) stipend rate, indexed annually. The stipend’s duration spans up to 1.5 years for successful Master’s by Research candidates and up to 3 years for successful PhD candidates, with a potential six-month extension.
For international recipients, the scholarship goes beyond the stipend, covering academic tuition fees. The duration for academic tuition fees extends up to six research periods for successful Master’s Research candidates and up to 12 research periods for successful PhD candidates, with an optional 2 research period extension.
In essence, the Faculty of Science Australian Research Council (ARC) Scholarship at the University of Sydney is more than a financial support initiative; it is a unique opportunity for research students to actively contribute to impactful projects, shape the future of their academic fields, and advance their careers within the esteemed Faculty of Science. This scholarship encapsulates the university’s commitment to fostering groundbreaking research that transcends boundaries and addresses the evolving needs of society.
