About Imperial College London and Scholarship
Imperial College London, officially known as the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, stands as a preeminent public research university situated in the heart of London, England. Its distinguished history can be traced back to the visionary Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, who conceived a cultural enclave comprising the Royal Albert Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum, and several royal colleges.
In 1907, Imperial College London was officially established by royal charter, uniting the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines, and the City and Guilds of London Institute. The subsequent amalgamation with St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in 1988 led to the formation of the Imperial College School of Medicine. In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the Imperial College Business School, further enriching the university’s academic landscape.
Imperial College London’s academic focus is centered on science, engineering, business, and medicine. The primary campus, located in South Kensington, serves as the epicenter for most teaching and research activities. The university’s commitment to innovation is evident in its second campus in White City, providing a dynamic platform for entrepreneurial endeavors. Imperial College London extends its academic reach through teaching hospitals dispersed across London, collectively forming an academic health science center. Formerly a member of the University of London, Imperial gained independent university status in 2007.
Distinguished by its highly international community, Imperial College London welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, with 59% hailing from outside the UK and representation from 140 countries on campus. A testament to its commitment to gender equality and academic excellence, a 2018 Department for Education report revealed that Imperial significantly enhances the earnings of both female and male graduates, with female graduates experiencing a 31.3% increase and male graduates seeing a 25.3% rise above the average earnings of their counterparts.
Imperial graduates are positioned at the forefront of success, as evidenced by The Guardian’s acknowledgment in 2018 that Imperial alumni command the highest salaries in the UK within the first year after graduation. Moreover, Imperial College London holds an impressive standing in various international rankings, such as being ranked 3rd globally and 1st in Europe for the MBA specialization of entrepreneurship in the 2023 QS MBA Rankings. In the 2019 Reuters World’s Most Innovative Universities, Imperial secured the 1st position in innovation in the UK and 2nd in Europe. Furthermore, Times Higher Education recognized Imperial as the top university in the UK based on the Research Excellence Framework results in 2021.
