About Aalborg University and Scholarship
When the North Jutland Committee for Higher Education Institutions was created in 1961, the notion of a university in the region of North Jutland was born. The Aalborg University Association was created on August 19, 1969, and a planning committee was formed with Eigil Hastrup serving as its head. Around 1,000 individuals from North Jutland demonstrated in support of their cause in front of the Folketinget (the Danish Parliament) in December of the same year.
A statute authorizing the construction of a university center in Aalborg was approved by the Danish Parliament in 1970. The Swedish historian and professor Jörgen Weibull was chosen as the new university center’s inaugural rector in 1972. The Aalborg University Center (AUC) was formally opened on September 1, 1974, by Danish Queen Margrethe II.
In 1976, Sven Caspersen succeeded Jrgen Weibull as rector of Aalborg University Center (AUC). A new management structure was also developed concurrently under a consistory. With the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the first official collaboration agreement was inked in 1980. In 1989, the North Jutland Knowledge Park was built next to the Aalborg University Center (AUC).
External members of the consistory joined in 1993. Aalborg University (AAU) replaced Aalborg University Center (AUC) as the organization’s name in 1994. In 1995, the engineering college at Esbjerg and Aalborg University merged to form Aalborg University – Esbjerg. The NOVI Science Park and Aalborg University established a connection in 1998.
In 2003, Aalborg University Copenhagen was established in partnership with the engineering school in Copenhagen. On February 1st, 2004, Jrgen Stergaard was named rector and a new university board was established. The university board appointed Finn Kjaersdam as rector in 2005. In 2007, the Danish Building Research Institute and Aalborg University combined. Aalborg University developed a medical education and a faculty of medicine in 2010. The university board appointed Michael Johansen as rector in 2014.
