About the University of Birmingham and Scholarship

Birmingham University, sometimes referred to as the University of Birmingham, is a public research university in Birmingham, England. It succeeded Sir Josiah Mason’s Mason Science College (1875) and Queen’s College, Birmingham (1825) in receiving a royal charter in 1900, making it the first civic or “red brick” university in England. It was also the first unitary university in England. The Russell Group, a collection of British research universities, and Universitas 21, a global network of research institutions, both include it as a founding member.

The student body in 2019–20 is the seventh largest in the UK (out of 169), with 23,155 undergraduate and 12,605 postgraduate students. The university’s annual revenue for 2021–2022 was £869.8 million, of which £215.0 million came from grants and contracts for research, with an outlay of £1.02 billion. The University of Birmingham improved from equal 31st in the previous REF in 2014 to 13th out of 129 institutions in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

The IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) aims to encourage and assist young women who want to work in the nuclear area. To that purpose, the MSCFP offers scholarships to chosen students pursuing a Master’s degree in nuclear-related areas, as well as internship possibilities supervised by the IAEA.

Fields of study

The program assists young women who are pursuing degrees in fields related to nuclear technology, such as nuclear engineering, nuclear physics and chemistry, nuclear medicine, isotopic techniques, radiation biology, nuclear safety, nuclear security, non-proliferation, and nuclear law, which are important to the IAEA’s efforts to advance the safe, secure, and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

For the course of their Master’s program, students get up to 20,000 EUR in financial aid to cover living expenses and tuition. Furthermore, the IAEA offers students the chance to participate in an internship program that can last up to 12 months.

Eligibility Criteria for the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme

Students from the IAEA Member States who fulfill the following admission conditions are eligible for the IAEA MSCFP:

• Candidates who are female and have been accepted by or enrolled in a Master’s program at an authorized university in a nuclear-related discipline.

Note: Candidates with above-average academic credentials (i.e., a grade point average of at least 3.5 out of 4.0) will be given preference.

Selection Criteria

The IAEA MSCFP Technical Selection Committee evaluates applications by MSCFP selection criteria, which include the applicant’s entry requirements, educational background and prior accomplishments, motivation, and the impact of the fellowship on the applicant’s career goals and commitment to public service. Diversity in geography and language is taken into account.

Application Procedure for the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme

The IAEA MSCFP online application form is open to anyone who satisfies the qualifying requirements. The specific date will be revealed in the following months, but the online application gateway will open around the middle of July 2023.

In addition to the completed online application form, the following documents are needed:

• Copy of Passport or National ID
• Official university acceptance letter for the Master’s program stating the nuclear-related subject of study and the program’s duration
• Confirmation of tuition prices or a statement of tuition fees
• TWO referees must submit completed reference forms (you may find the form here) directly to MSCFP@iaea.org.

NOTE: The MSCFP online application form must be used to submit all supporting documentation, which must be in English. If papers are provided in their original language, a certified English translation should also be included. Incomplete applications won’t be accepted.
