About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland was the first university in the state and was formally founded on April 16, 1910, with the gazette of nominations to the first UQ Senate. It was founded by a 1909 Act of the State Parliament. In Brisbane’s Old Government House on George Street, education began in 1911. In the first year, there were 83 students (60 males and 23 women), and three faculties (Arts, Science, and Engineering).
Following the First World War, the University quickly outgrown its inner-city position. A second location in Victoria Park (where the Medical School is presently located) was obtained in 1922. Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Miss Mary Emelia Mayne, donated money four years later to buy the St. Lucia property where the university’s main campus is presently situated. The first structure, subsequently known as the Forgan Smith structure in honor of the then-Premier, was finished in 1939 after construction on the St. Lucia site began. It served as the cutting-edge command center for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific during World War II.
In 2020, Frank and Swan Halim created the HDR Health and Medicine Top-Up Scholarship in honor of all Queenslanders and Australians who had extended hospitality to them and supported them throughout their lives.
