About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a public research university largely based in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. UQ was founded in 1909 by the Queensland government and is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal title for the state’s oldest institution. UQ is also a founding member of edX, Australia’s leading Group of Eight, and the worldwide Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

World War I slowed the growth of the university, but following the war, university enrolments for education and research took off as demand for higher education surged in Australia. As a result, in the early 1920s, the expanding institution needed to find a larger campus because its initial location on George Street in Brisbane had limited capacity for development.

In 1927, James O’Neil Mayne and his sister, Mary, gave the Brisbane City Council a contribution of roughly £50,000 to buy 274 acres (111 ha) of property in St Lucia and give it to the University of Queensland as its permanent home. Thomas Parnell began the pitch drop experiment the same year. The experiment has been regarded as the world’s oldest, and it is still going on today. The construction of the St Lucia campus was hampered by a lack of funds. As a result, the first building of the university at St Lucia was not completed until 1938.

It was eventually renamed the Forgan Smith Building after the day’s premier, and it was finished in 1939. The Forgan Smith Building was utilized as a military post during WWII, first as an advanced headquarters for the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

Australia restructured its higher education system in 1990, removing the binary system of universities and institutions of further study. The university combined with Queensland Agricultural College during this transition to form the new UQ Gatton campus. UQ Ipswich became one of Australia’s first fully web-enabled campuses in 1999. The University of Queensland received the Queensland Greats Awards in 2010.

UQ became a member of edX, an international consortium of massive open online courses (MOOCs), in May 2013. The first four UQx courses, which began in May 2014, address hypersonics, tropical coastal ecosystems, biomedical imaging, and the science of daily thinking.

The late Dr Clem Jones AO created the Clem Jones Sporting Scholarships in 2000, which are supported by an annual grant from The Clem Jones Foundation.
