The University of Manitoba (U of M, Manitoba, or UM) is a public research university in Canada’s province of Manitoba. It was Western Canada’s first university, established in 1877. The University of Manitoba is the largest institution in Manitoba and the 17th largest in all of Canada, both in terms of overall student enrollment and campus size. With several campuses spread out over the city, its main campus is situated in Winnipeg’s southern Fort Garry neighborhood.

Eligibility Criteria for the University of Manitoba Work-Study Program

Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the University of Manitoba Work-Study Program:

  • Have documentation showing that you will get at least $2,000 in 2023/2024 government student aid, or that you will receive support for your handicap, postsecondary education, or an Indigenous band. Please email Work-Study if you are experiencing a delay in obtaining your funds so the scholarship office can come up with a solution for your circumstance. (Note: Prior government assistance is not counted; Registered educational savings plans, personal bank loans such as credit lines, and/or educational loans are not taken into account with this program.)
  • Be enrolled full-time at the University of Manitoba for both terms (Fall 2023 and Winter 2024) as an undergraduate or graduate student. The minimal course load for students is 60% or 9 credits per semester for undergraduates. Please get in touch with the school if you’re a graduate student so they can assess your eligibility on a case-by-case basis.
  • Possess a least 2.0 institutional GPA from their previous academic year and be in good academic standing (applicable to returning UM students only).
  • Be a Manitoba resident for the duration of the Work-Study job period.

Application Process for the University of Manitoba Work-Study Program

Interested candidates seeking the University of Manitoba Work-Study Program in Canada should follow these steps:

Step 2: Attend a group orientation session

Step 3: Apply for Work-Study positions

Due to financial assistance regulations, each year all students must reapply for the Work-Study program.

To submit a Work-Study application:

  • Register or sign in with your existing UMConnect account.
  • Navigate to Work-Study and then Work-Study Program Application in the navigation window on the left.
  • Fill out and apply to receive Work-Study access that has already been granted. You must click the “Accept” button on the right-hand side under “Action required by you” after submitting the form to view and apply for job openings.

The application must be accompanied by proof of your eligibility. An example of this can be a copy of your 2023 financial aid support, sponsorship of an Indigenous band, or money for a handicap.
