About Victoria University of Wellington and Scholarship
In Wellington, New Zealand, there is a public institution called Victoria University of Wellington (Mori: Te Herenga Waka). It was a constituent institution of the University of New Zealand and was created in 1897 by an act of parliament.
The institution provides a wide variety of additional courses in addition to its well-regarded programs in law, the humanities, and several scientific fields. All first-year courses are accessible to enrollment, however, some programs (including those in law, criminology, creative writing, architecture, and engineering) have restrictions on second-year enrollment.
Kate Sheppard Chambers created this award in 2021 to motivate the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington students to pursue studies in the area of women and the law. A network of female barristers located all around Aotearoa is called Kate Sheppard Chambers (www.katesheppardchambers.co.nz). The attorneys of Kate Sheppard Chambers encourage and support women in the legal profession and are motivated by Kate Sheppard’s leadership to advance inclusion and equality. Kate Sheppard Chambers supports helping and supporting people just beginning out in the legal profession. To do this, Kate Sheppard Chambers created the Kate Sheppard Chambers Scholarship in 2021 (financed by Kate Sheppard Chambers members).
The Kate Sheppard Chambers members would want to see more studies (whether theoretical or quantitative/qualitative) regarding women and the law in light of the glaring gender imbalances that still exist in Aotearoa. The progress of women is supposed to be aided by further research into the problems they face.

Eligibility Criteria for Kate Sheppard Chambers Scholarship for Research Relating to Women and the Law
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Kate Sheppard Chambers Scholarship for Research Relating to Women and the Law at the Victoria University of Wellington:
- Open to all Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington students presently enrolled in an honors or postgraduate law or humanities program who are studying or conducting research on a subject related to women and the law.
- The applicant must be studying at the Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington in an LLB (Hons) or postgraduate degree program in law or humanities.
- Candidates must be enrolled in or conducting research in a subject area linked to women and the law.
- Candidates must be citizens or lawful permanent residents of New Zealand.
- A varied or minority background is encouraged among applicants.
- Candidates who want to work in the legal field after finishing their education may receive preference.
Note: The Kate Sheppard Chambers will choose the winning applicant after consulting with a representative from Victoria University of Wellington’s Faculty of Law.

Application Procedure for Kate Sheppard Chambers Scholarship for Research Relating to Women and the Law
By 4.30 p.m. on the closing date, a completed online application must be submitted. Applications submitted after the deadline or with missing information won’t be considered. To be considered, all necessary supporting materials (including references) must be submitted by 4.30 p.m. on the application deadline day. Inquiries should be sent to the admissions office.
Further Information
Within one month of receiving the award, the chosen winner is required to submit a letter of gratitude to the donor. A Kate Sheppard Chambers member could give mentorship and assistance to the chosen candidate.
Rules and Conditions
- All Scholarship offers are subject to the Recipient’s full-time enrollment in a full-year program (defined as the number of points deemed full-time by Studylink) throughout the Scholarship’s allotted period of time. The Scholarship won’t be paid out until this requirement has been satisfied.
- A subsequent year cannot be chosen for the Scholarship.
- The Scholarship could be given out in addition to other prizes.
- Partially repaying the scholarship is often anticipated if the student leaves Victoria University of Wellington while it is still in effect or does not make adequate progress. The Scholarships Office must be notified in advance if a recipient plans to withdraw.
- Recipients are required to represent Victoria University of Wellington as ambassadors and, if asked, take part in promotional activities or events.
- The applicability of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be altered at the Deciding Authority’s discretion in exceptional cases or to prevent hardship for any Scholarship applicant.
