About Flinders University and Scholarship

Flinders University stands as a beacon of academic excellence and innovation, with a history dating back to its establishment in 1966. The university, named in honor of the intrepid British navigator Matthew Flinders, renowned for his exploration of the Australian and South Australian coastline in the early 19th century, has flourished into a prominent public research institution.

The heart of Flinders University is its main campus at Bedford Park, an expanse of 156 acres adorned with lush gardens and native bushland, creating an idyllic setting for academic pursuits. Beyond Bedford Park, Flinders extends its influence across 11 locations, encompassing South Australia and the Northern Territory. Campuses like Tonsley, Adelaide Central Business District, Renmark, Alice Springs, and Darwin contribute to the university’s widespread presence.

Distinguished as a member of the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Group, Flinders has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and research prowess. The university’s dedication to nurturing talent and ensuring postgraduate success was underscored by its leadership in postgraduate employment outcomes, a recognition bestowed upon it in the 2021 Graduate Outcome Survey – Longitudinal, as released by the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching.

Flinders University embarked on its academic journey on March 7, 1966, with an inaugural enrolment of 400 students. The momentous occasion of its opening was graced by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, while Peter Karmel assumed the role of the first Vice-Chancellor, and Sir Mark Mitchell became the first Chancellor.

A pioneering initiative early in its history was the integration of the Flinders Medical Centre (FMC), a state-of-the-art public hospital, with the university’s Medical School. This groundbreaking approach, the first of its kind in Australia, marked a significant leap in medical education and research. The acceptance of undergraduate medical students in 1974 further solidified Flinders’ commitment to advancing healthcare education.

The main campus, nestled in the southern suburb of Bedford Park, is complemented by additional sites in the Adelaide inner city at Victoria Square and Tonsley. Flinders’ reach extends to regional South Australia, southwest Victoria, and the Northern Territory, where it maintains external teaching facilities.

In alignment with its ethos of inclusivity and community engagement, Flinders University introduces the Community Bridging Services (CBS) Scholarship. This scholarship aims to provide support to students with disabilities pursuing a degree at Flinders, particularly those aspiring to contribute to community-focused careers. Generously funded by donations from Community Bridging Services (CBS) Inc., this scholarship seeks to empower and uplift deserving individuals. Each scholarship, valued at $3500, is disbursed in two equal installments after the census date of each semester.
