About Flinders University and Scholarship

In the late 1950s, the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus found itself nearing its capacity, prompting the need for expansion. The pivotal moment came in 1960 when Premier Thomas Playford announced the allocation of 150 hectares (370 acres) of state government-owned land in Burbank, now known as Bedford Park, to the University of Adelaide for the establishment of a second campus.

The planning phase for this new campus commenced in 1961, led by the principal-designate, the distinguished economist and professor Peter Karmel. Karmel was steadfast in his vision that the Bedford Park campus should operate independently from the North Terrace campus. He aspired to create a space where innovation could thrive unburdened by tradition.

Capital works officially commenced in 1962, fueled by a substantial grant of £3.8 million from the Australian Universities Commission. The architectural vision for the new university was crafted by Geoff Harrison in collaboration with the esteemed architectural firm Hassell, McConnell, and Partners. The design aimed to create a flexible and scalable campus that could eventually accommodate up to 6000 students, with the potential for future expansions.

In 1990, a significant milestone was reached with the initiation of the most extensive building project on campus since the mid-1970s. This project saw the commencement of construction on three new buildings dedicated to Law and Commerce, Engineering, and Information Science and Technology. The establishment of a School of Engineering received approval in 1991, and soon after, degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as Biomedical Engineering, were introduced.

Flinders University has since evolved into a dynamic institution offering a diverse range of educational opportunities. With over 160 undergraduate and postgraduate courses and a commitment to providing high-quality degree research supervision across all disciplines, the university embraces innovation. Leveraging new information and communication technologies, many courses at Flinders incorporate flexible options to enhance the learning experience.

Reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and diversity, Flinders University established the AMK Indigenous Law Students Scholarship. This scholarship, generously funded by AMK Law, aims to support Indigenous students pursuing the Bachelor of Laws and Legal Practice at Flinders University. Each scholarship, valued at $5,000, is disbursed in two equal installments of $2,500 after the census date of each semester. This initiative exemplifies the university’s dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for Indigenous students in their legal education journey.
