About Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Scholarship
The Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) stands as a venerable institution with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1472. Originally founded as the University of Ingolstadt by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut, it has evolved into Germany’s sixth-oldest university in continuous operation. Over the centuries, it has weathered transitions and relocations, becoming the esteemed LMU known today.
The university’s journey includes a pivotal move from Ingolstadt to Landshut in 1800, prompted by the threat of French forces. Subsequently, in 1826, King Ludwig I of Bavaria orchestrated the relocation to its current location in Munich. In recognition of its storied past, King Maximilian I of Bavaria officially bestowed the name Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität upon the institution in 1802, a name it proudly carries today.
LMU’s significance extends beyond its historical roots, making it the second-largest university in Germany in terms of student population. The 2018/19 winter semester witnessed a vibrant academic community with a total of 51,606 matriculated students. Among these, 9,424 were freshmen, and approximately 17% were international students, contributing to the university’s diverse and global atmosphere. The university’s commitment to academic excellence is underscored by its substantial operating budget, which, in 2018, amounted to 734.9 million euros without accounting for the university hospital. Including the hospital, the funding reached an impressive 1.94 billion euros.
In the global academic landscape, LMU Munich has earned noteworthy accolades. The 2024 QS World University Rankings position LMU at an impressive 54th overall in the world and 2nd in Germany. The university’s strengths are evident across various disciplines, particularly in the arts and humanities, natural sciences, life sciences, and medicine, as reflected in the 2023 QS Subject Rankings. The Times Higher Education Ranking for 2024 further solidifies LMU’s standing, ranking it 2nd in Germany and 38th globally. In subject-specific rankings for 2023, LMU claims the top spot in Germany for arts and humanities, law, and psychology.
LMU Munich’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and academic excellence is exemplified by the SIST LMU Equality Scholarship. This semester-long initiative, generously funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and administered by LMU’s International Office, aims to support international students and doctoral candidates with a proven record of academic excellence.
