Located in Birmingham, England, the institution of Birmingham, sometimes known as Birmingham University, is a public research institution. It became the first English civic or “red brick” university to receive its royal charter in 1900, succeeding Queen’s College, Birmingham (founded in 1825 as the Birmingham School of Medicine and Surgery) and Mason Science College (founded in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason). It was also the first English unitary university.

Eligibility Criteria for University of Birmingham Masters Scholarship Postgraduate Taught Student

Applicants are advised to meet the following requirements to be qualified for the University of Birmingham Masters Scholarship Postgraduate Taught Student:

  • Domiciled in the United Kingdom: students who meet the additional eligibility requirements and are registered as Home for fee status purposes are qualified;
  • Self-funded: To cover your tuition and living expenses, you must be self-funding or applying for a postgraduate government loan; you cannot receive any other scholarships, except the University of Birmingham Postgraduate Progression Award, which you may hold in addition to the Birmingham Masters Scholarship;
  • Not currently enrolled in a postgraduate degree course—applicants cannot be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program at this time.
  • Enrolling in a master’s program in a qualifying field

The following courses, offered at the Edgbaston Campus in Stratford-upon-Avon, in collaboration with other universities, or via distance learning, are eligible:

  • MSc (Taught)
  • MPH
  • MEd
  • LLM
  • MA (Taught)
  • MSc (Pre-reg)

Please take note that the following programs are not accepted: Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert), MA/MSc by Research, MRes (taught and research combined), and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip).

Selection Criteria

A panel of university selection experts will decide who is eligible to earn the scholarship based on the following standards:

  • Academic excellence and prior coursework: Birmingham Masters Scholarships are mostly given out based on applicants’ prior coursework performance.
  • Professional credentials and accomplishments: Credentials and additional noteworthy accomplishments from pertinent professional jobs will be considered.
  • Strength of the personal statement: You have the opportunity to differentiate your application with your statement. Among other things, it should: state your enthusiasm for the topic, show that your prior education adequately prepared you for the degree, list any relevant work experience, and explain how the course will fit into your long-term goals.
  • Applications from students who have graduated from one of the Midlands-based universities will be given priority. 
  • Priorities for other university or college subjects

Students who have finished their degrees at Midlands-based universities will be given preference when applying for the Birmingham Masters Scholarships. The list of Midlands-based universities that will be given precedence is provided in the terms and conditions.

Application Process for University of Birmingham Masters Scholarship Postgraduate Taught Student

Applicants must have completed both of the following before the deadline to be eligible for an award:

The application ID number that you were given while applying to your master’s program should be entered.

  • The deadline for round one is 23:59 (UK time) on 30 April 2024.
  • The deadline for round two is 23:59 (UK time) on 31 July 2024.

Your application will automatically be carried over into round two if you are selected as a reserve in round one. Reapplication is not required. You can also visit the official website for further details.
