About Durham University and Scholarship

Founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837, Durham University (officially known as the University of Durham) is a college public research university located in Durham, England.

The Hatfield Lioness Scholarship is intended to help a female student from a developing nation with limited access to higher education pursue postgraduate studies at Durham University. The scholarship is sponsored by alumni, friends of Hatfield College, and other sources that support the scholarship’s objectives. It was introduced in 2018 as part of the celebration of Durham University’s 30 years of women students.

Hatfield College seeks to bestow the Lioness Scholarship on a person who possesses the intellectual and character attributes necessary to finish and profit from a postgraduate program, who will also serve as a good representative of their home nation in Durham and use the knowledge and skills they have gained from their master’s program and experience there to benefit their home country when they return.

What the scholarship will pay for is:

  • Complete payment of tuition for the university
  • Allowance for living costs
  • One economy roundtrip ticket from the nation of origin to the United Kingdom and the return airfare from Durham City to the United Kingdom airport
  • At Hatfield College, fully funded, self-catered, mixed housing
  • “Settling in allowance” upon arriving
  • The cost of a UK health surcharge and a UK visa

Restrictions:

  • The Scholarship does not provide funding for dependants nor for travel during the Scholarship
  • Accommodation is for the Scholarship holder only; dependants cannot be accommodated.

Hatfield Lioness Postgraduate Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be qualified for the Hatfield Lioness Postgraduate Scholarship at Durham University:

  • It is required that by June 2024, candidates have applied for and been granted a spot in their preferred master’s program without conditions.
  • For their postgraduate studies to be funded, applicants cannot receive any other scholarships.
  • Applicants have to be female.
  • One of the following nations’ citizens is required of applicants:

Additional Information

Each candidate should:

  • possess an appropriate honors degree that meets the requirements to be accepted into the master’s program of your choice; and
  • possess the necessary English language proficiency in addition to any other prerequisites for admission to the course;
  • not possess an advanced degree; and
  • not otherwise possess the financial resources to pursue a Master’s degree in the United Kingdom.

Application Process for Hatfield Lioness Postgraduate Scholarship

Stage 1: Send in an academic application for the master’s program of your choice, mentioning in the application that you intend to apply for the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship;

Stage 2: After the application form is released, submit it to be considered for the scholarship;

Stage 3: Before the deadline, send an email to hatfield.trust@durham.ac.uk with all supporting documentation (insert IELTS certificate, academic transcript, references, and offer letter from Durham University).
