About Ohio State University and Scholarship
The Ohio State University, commonly referred to as Ohio State or OSU, stands as a prominent public land-grant research university located in Columbus, Ohio. Established in 1870 under the Morrill Act of 1862, Ohio State emerged as the state’s ninth university and the designated land-grant institution. Classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity,” the university has become a powerhouse of academic and research excellence. As of 2023, Ohio State boasts an impressive endowment of $7.4 billion, reflecting its financial strength and commitment to advancing education and knowledge.
Originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College, the institution initially focused on agricultural and mechanical disciplines. However, under the leadership of Governor Rutherford B. Hayes, Ohio State underwent a transformative evolution into a comprehensive university. In 1878, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation officially changing the name to “the Ohio State University” and expanding the university’s scope to encompass a broader range of academic pursuits.
Ohio State has cultivated a vibrant campus life, offering a diverse array of opportunities for its student body exceeding 50,000 undergraduate students and nearly 15,000 graduate students. The university hosts over 1,000 student organizations, including intercollegiate, club, and recreational sports programs, student media organizations and publications, fraternities and sororities, and three student governments. The athletic teams, known as the Ohio State Buckeyes, compete in Division I of the NCAA and hold membership in the prestigious Big Ten Conference for the majority of their sports. Notably, Ohio State’s football program is valued at a staggering $1.5 billion as of 2017.
Ohio State’s influence extends beyond its campus, particularly in the field of political science and international relations. The university’s political science department and faculty have made significant contributions to the construction and development of the constructivist and realist schools of international relations. In a 2004 study conducted by the London School of Economics (LSE), Ohio State’s political science program was ranked first among public institutions and fourth globally, underscoring its academic impact on the world stage.
