About Radboud University and Scholarship
The rich history of establishing a university in Nijmegen dates back to 1655 when the first University of Nijmegen, known as the Kwartierlijke Academie van Nijmegen, was founded. This early institution focused on imparting knowledge in traditional fields such as theology, medicine, and law. Despite initial successes, the Kwartierlijke Academie faced challenges and ultimately terminated around 1680 due to the impact of successive plague outbreaks and the French invasion of the Netherlands in 1672.
Following various attempts to revive the concept of a university in Nijmegen, the present-day Radboud University Nijmegen emerged in 1923, initially known as Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen (Catholic University of Nijmegen). The university’s establishment was spearheaded by the Saint Radboud Foundation, a network of bishops aiming to empower Catholic intellectuals in the Netherlands. During this period, Dutch Roman Catholics faced disadvantages, with limited access to higher positions in governmental and scientific institutions. The creation of a university was envisioned as a means to address this disparity.
Radboud University Nijmegen continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence and inclusivity. The Faculty of Philosophy at the university extends support to outstanding international students aspiring to enroll in the Research Master’s program in Philosophy. The faculty offers two scholarships designed to alleviate financial burdens for deserving students from abroad. Each scholarship amounts to €10,500 for the initial year of the Research Master’s program, and recipients with commendable academic performance have the opportunity for renewal in the second and final year of their studies.
By providing these scholarships, the Faculty of Philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen actively contributes to creating a diverse and vibrant academic community, fostering the growth and development of talented individuals from around the world pursuing advanced studies in philosophy.
