About the University of Leicester and Scholarship
The initiative to establish a university in Leicester traces back to the Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society, which was founded during a time when “philosophical” encompassed what they now consider “scientific” pursuits. Inspired by the success of Owen’s College in Manchester and the founding of the University of Birmingham in 1900, alongside the establishment of Nottingham University College, there emerged a consensus that Leicester should also have its university college. During the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries, university colleges lacked degree-granting authority and had to affiliate with universities holding such powers. During this period, students at university colleges typically underwent examinations set by the University of London.
The University of Leicester is home to distinguished research groups in fields such as astrophysics, biochemistry, and genetics. Notably, the groundbreaking techniques of genetic fingerprinting were conceived and refined at Leicester in 1984 by Sir Alec Jeffreys. The university is also home to Europe’s largest academic center for space research, where space probes have been constructed, most notably the Mars Lander Beagle 2, developed in collaboration with the Open University.
Leicester’s physicists, under the leadership of Ken Pounds, played a crucial role in validating a fundamental prediction of Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity – the existence and prevalence of black holes in the universe. Additionally, the university serves as a founding partner of the £52 million National Space Centre.
Leicester holds the distinction of being one of a select few universities to have received the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education on multiple occasions: first in 1994 for physics and astronomy, and subsequently in 2002 for genetics. In 2008, the university was honored with the title of University of the Year by the Times Higher Education. It also boasts the unique accomplishment of winning Times Higher Education awards for seven consecutive years. Furthermore, the university has consistently secured a spot among the top 20 universities in the United Kingdom in rankings published by the Times Good University Guide and The Guardian.
