About Goldsmiths University of London and Scholarship
The Goldsmiths’ Technical and Recreative Institute (more generally known as the “Goldsmiths’ Institute”) was established in 1891 by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. As a medieval guild for goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers, The Goldsmiths’ Company was created in the 12th century.
The Livery Company pledged “the promotion of technical skill, knowledge, health and general well-being among men and women of the industrial, working and artisan classes” as the purpose of the new Institute’s founding. The original Institute had its headquarters in New Cross, in what was then the Royal Naval School; the structure is now known as the Richard Hoggart Building, and it continues to be the focal point of the campus.
The institution was reestablished as Goldsmiths’ College in 1904 after merging with the University of London (the apostrophe was deleted in 1993 and the name “College” was eliminated in a rebranding in 2006). The nation’s main provider of teacher preparation at the time was Goldsmiths. Later, training duties were extended to include art teacher certification courses, university postgraduate certificates in education, and teacher refresher courses. The college also operated a nursery school on its own.
A new Arts building, created by Sir Reginald Blomfield, was built by Goldsmiths in 1907, not long after the merger. The faculty and students of the college were evacuated during World War II to University College, Nottingham, which turned out to be a wise choice both at the time and in retrospect given that the main building was destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1940 and wasn’t fully repaired until 1947.
The care experienced and alienated students at Goldsmiths will receive the best assistance possible from the time they apply until they graduate. Please visit the specialized websites at www.gold.ac.uk/care-leavers/ for details on the types of guidance and assistance you may obtain.
The school provides a bursary to care for experienced and distant students as part of this support. For your undergraduate program at Goldsmiths, you will get a monetary grant of £1,000 for each year of study, or £1,000 for your PGCE program for one year. This cash can be used for travel, the purchase of tools and books, or anything else that will make your stay at Goldsmiths more convenient.
